Vanaja Mamatha Bhukya is the 15-year-old daughter of Somayya Ramachandriah Marikanti, a poor, low-caste fisherman from rural Andhra Pradesh. Somayya struggles to support his family as dwindling catches at sea and mounting debts press on them, casting a constant shadow over their modest life by the coast.

One day, Vanaja and her teenage friend Lacchi Bhavani Renukunta attend a theatrical performance by Rama Devi Urmila Dammannagari, a celebrated Kuchipudi artist who once dominated the village stage. A traveling soothsayer then foretells to Vanaja that she will become a great dancer, a prophecy that fills her with renewed purpose even as it unsettles those around her.

With her father’s permission, Vanaja moves into the house of the landlady, Rama Devi, hoping to learn Kuchipudi. While there, she works as a farmhand, tending the chickens and occasionally getting into mischief. Her vivacity and fearlessness win the landlady’s eye, and Rama Devi soon promotes her to the kitchen under the old, loyal cook Radhamma Krishnamma Gundimalla. As she settles in, Vanaja’s talent begins to bloom, and the household becomes a training ground for music and dance.

Settling into her new routine, Vanaja is invited to play a round of ashta chamma against the landlady. Knowing the mistress’s competitive streak, she deliberately loses, a small act that nonetheless earns Rama Devi’s mentorship in music and then in dance, as Vanaja’s gifts start to shine brighter with each passing day.

At the same time, the dynamics in the house begin to shift with the arrival of Shekhar Karan Singh, Rama Devi’s 23-year-old son who has returned from the United States and is campaigning for a local office. A powerful chemistry flickers between them, fueled by flirtation and innuendo, complicating the delicate balance of power in the household and in Vanaja’s world.

Meanwhile, Somayya’s fishing boat is seized by creditors, driving him deeper into sorrow and alcohol as debts mount and the family’s stability trembles. The tension surrounding Vanaja’s ascent and Shekhar’s ambitions creates a volatile backdrop for what is to come, a pressure cooker of social expectations, class boundaries, and personal desires.

A public incident punctuates the clash between Vanaja’s growing confidence and Shekhar’s pride, escalating into a serious rupture. What follows is a brutal act: Vanaja is raped by Shekhar, and she becomes pregnant. The pregnancy shatters her world, and Rama Devi’s earlier hopes for her future clash with the harsh reality of what has happened. Vanaja hopes that the physical evidence of the child will compel justice, but Shekhar refuses to marry her, barred by caste and status. The news fractures the household’s dynamics and intensifies the stake in a society that already marks every step of a girl like Vanaja with danger and stigma.

Vanaja gives birth to a boy, a child whom Rama Devi and Shekhar eventually claim after the trauma, leaving the young mother to confront a future shaped by power, caste, and the choices others make for her. The ending underscores a grim truth about the world she inhabits: the child grows up within an upper-caste framework, even as his mother’s courage and suffering remain unresolved, a poignant reflection on what society rewards and what it punishes.
