The Stooges, in detective roles, are pulled away from their gin rummy table by a relentless phone and a steady stream of visitors. The trio—Moe, Larry, and Shemp—battle to stay focused as the gin rummy game clashes with constant interruptions and a chorus of office noise. Into this chaos steps the sly pickpocket, Slick Chick, who slips out of the police station on the strength of her silver-tongued talk—Slick Chick leaving the room in a flurry of wit and mystery. Shemp then re-enters the card game, injecting another layer of mayhem as the detectives wrestle with a stubborn filing cabinet that seems to have a mind of its own.

Their routine is upended when their angry superior issues a ticking clock challenge: the 24-hour mandate from Police Chief B. A. Copper to crack the murder case of Slug McGurk. The crew’s first encounter with a suspect, Chopper, is a tangled affair, as a long-winded confession stretches the limits of comprehension and leads them to dismiss his claims before they can be weighed properly. Amid the disorder, [Larry]’s flirtatious advance toward a female officer is quickly rebuked, reminding everyone that their badge comes with a dose of chaos and romance in equal measure.

The office becomes a revolving door of visitors and oddball witnesses, each contribution adding to the mounting confusion. A witness arrives with a peculiar appearance and an unusual way of speaking, leaving the Stooges puzzling over what they’re really hearing. In the midst of the din, Shemp makes a quip about a dismissed bootlegging charge, a gag that lands squarely in the middle of the mounting mix-ups.
