Spoilers ahead
Based on the early life of the famous television personality Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, this film follows the journey of a young girl known by her childhood nickname, Totto-chan. Set against the backdrop of 1930s Japan, the story introduces us to a spirited child who struggles to fit into the rigid and demanding environment of the public school system. Because she exhibits behaviors that would today be compared to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, she is viewed as a misfit by her teachers. Recognizing that the traditional academic structure is failing her, her wealthy parents, including Chō Kuroyanagi, decide to withdraw her from public education to find a more suitable environment.
