Tom Sawyer Rhett Akins and his half-brother Sid are on their way to school when they spot Huckleberry Finn fishing. Tom briefly contemplates skipping class to join Huck, but Becky Thatcher Hynden Walch catches his eye and he almost forgets his plan. He makes a valiant effort to slip into the classroom, yet Sid snitches on him to the strict Mr. Dobbins Richard Kind. The mischief earns Tom a seat among the girls, a setup he surprisingly enjoys because it puts him next to Becky. He’s also beside Amy Lawrence Clea Lewis, a friend with whom he has jokingly become “engaged.” Amy still harbors feelings for him, but Tom remains dazzled by Becky, oblivious to Amy’s affections. The class chaos is punctuated by Rebel, Tom’s pet frog, whose antics trigger an early dismissal for everyone.
On the walk home, during the musical moment Hook, Line and Sinker, Tom makes several attempts to steal a kiss from Becky, only to be blocked by her stern father, Judge Thatcher Waylon Jennings. The very next day, Tom is forced to paint Aunt Polly’s house as punishment, so he convinces his friends to take on the job for him. Becky stops by, and Tom invites her to join the effort—but with a playful catch: she must kiss him. Just as the moment seems right, Rebel the frog interrupts with a prank kiss, causing everyone to burst into laughter.
That night, Tom and Huck go treasure hunting and witness Injurin’ Joe Kevin Michael Richardson and his sidekick Mutt Potter uncovering a chest of gold. Deputy Bean Thom Adcox-Hernandez arrives, visiting his wife’s gravesite, and discovers Joe and Mutt. From behind a tombstone, the boys watch as Joe brutally murders Bean, frames Mutt, and captures Rebel. Realizing Joe could track them through Rebel, Tom and Huck swear to keep quiet about what they’ve seen.
The next day at school, Becky accidentally spills ink on the test results. Amy is eager to tell on Becky, but Tom takes the blame and endures a brutal spanking from Mr. Dobbins. After class, Tom becomes “engaged” to Becky, and a musical number by Becky and Amy, One Dream, sees the two girls openly declare their love for Tom. Tom confesses that he feels the same toward Amy, which causes Becky to end the engagement and walk away. Tom and Huck visit Mutt, who is on death row, hoping he’ll recall Joe’s murder of Deputy Bean. Mutt, however, doesn’t remember the incident, while Joe tracks them down and they manage to escape on a raft. The two boys celebrate their narrow survival with the song Friends for Life.
Returning to town, Tom and Huck discover the townsfolk believe they have perished and are mourning their loss. They crash their own funeral service, returning as heroes. Amy, eager to wound Becky, kisses Tom in front of Becky, who storms off heartbroken. Judge Thatcher sentences Mutt to be hanged, but Huck and Tom testify against Joe at the last moment. Joe pursues them but is swept away by the river. With justice served, Mutt’s charges are dropped, and the pair are hailed as heroes.
During the victory celebration, Becky persuades Tom to explore a cave, with Amy following. Inside, Tom reassures Becky, telling her she is the prettiest girl he’s seen, a remark that deeply saddens Amy. The pair get lost in the dark, and Becky loses hope of a way out. Tom lights the way with a hopeful song, Light at the End of the Tunnel, and their search leads them to a hidden treasure—and to Joe. With Huck’s help, Tom subdues Joe, a rockfall sealing Joe’s fate, and he is joyfully reunited with the townspeople and Aunt Polly.
In the aftermath, Amy becomes Huck’s girlfriend, and Becky finally becomes Tom’s girlfriend. Amy’s jealousy fades as Becky and Tom begin a romance. Sid’s old habit of snitching backfires again, and Aunt Polly has Sid paint the house instead. The story closes with the four youngsters sharing a picnic, where Tom proudly reveals a gold coin and hints at another treasure hunt to come. Aunt Polly’s steadfast care, the clever schemes, and the band of friends who stick together give the town’s tale its enduring charm.
