The Stopover 2016

Following a tour in Afghanistan, a squad of French soldiers is flown to a sun-drenched Cyprus beach hotel for a three-day break. The Army uses this pause to address the psychological toll of war, helping soldiers process memories of wounds and loss. Alongside rest, they attend group therapy sessions where participants revisit dangerous moments, sometimes with painful clarity. The atmosphere is calm for the most part, yet a quiet tension lingers beneath the surface, and the dynamic among the troops grows subtly more fragile as the days unfold, led by Le lieutenant Damien Bonnard.

Three of the women accept a ride into the mountains with two Cypriot men, and the night unfolds with drinking, dancing, and sex. The choice to mingle with outsiders creates a tense beat in the group, a moment of loosened boundaries that contrasts with the regimented life they left behind. In the following hours, three of the French men move to locate them, and the situation spirals as intoxication mixes with raw nerves and instinct. What begins as a reckless search becomes a troubling confrontation, as the men, in a misguided act of punishment and jealousy, stop in the woods with the intention to rape the women.

After a night of drunken struggles among the trees, the men drive away and the women are left to walk the long road back to the hotel, their silhouettes flickering in the early light as the sea air tips between pines and memories. The morning after arrives with an uneasy calm, and the group—men and women together—reassembles and boards a plane for Paris, the veneer of normalcy returning as they resume military discipline and the routine of life back home.
