The Mountain Echo Score Breakdown

The Mountain presents a visually striking but narratively opaque experience. Its cinematography and production design receive consistent praise for their meticulous, monochromatic composition, yet the film falters in delivering a coherent storyline. Characters, particularly Jeff Goldblum, display moments of charisma, while Tye Sheridan’s restrained performance divides opinion. The pacing is deliberately slow, contributing to an atmosphere of unease that many find inaccessible. Consequently, the work remains memorable for its ambition but struggles to sustain broader appeal.

Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.

  • Art & Craft 73

In terms of visual craft, the film excels with delicate, Bergman‑esque framing and a restrained beige palette that creates a haunting mood. Reviewers highlight the meticulous composition and 4:3 aspect ratio as standout elements, though some argue the aesthetic emphasis outweighs narrative clarity. Overall the artistry is strong but occasionally self‑indulgent.

  • Character & Emotion 45

Character work is uneven; Jeff Goldblum’s quirky presence garners praise for its magnetic quality, while Tye Sheridan’s minimalistic performance divides viewers. Some find Sheridan’s expressionless demeanor appropriate to the film’s somber tone, yet others label the protagonist dull and less engaging than the surrounding patients. The supporting cast adds occasional depth but overall lacks consistency.

  • Story & Flow 30

The narrative struggles with coherence, offering a meandering plot that many reviewers describe as inconsistent and difficult to follow. Themes are presented without clear grounding, leaving the audience uncertain of the film’s intent. While the ambiguity may be deliberate, the lack of narrative anchors results in a confusing and often disengaging viewing experience.

  • Sensory Experience 65

Sensory elements receive mixed reactions; the haunting score and stark sound design complement the film’s bleak visual aesthetic, creating an oppressive atmosphere noted by several reviewers. However, some argue that striking imagery cannot compensate for the distressing subject matter, finding the sensory experience unsettling without offering narrative relief.

  • Rewatch Factor 40

Rewatch appeal is limited, as most viewers report the film’s slow pacing and opaque storytelling diminish repeat enjoyment. The visual artistry and occasional strong performances provide some merit, yet the overall sense of unease and narrative obscurity make the movie more of a singular, challenging encounter than a film to revisit.

Spoilers ahead

In the 1950s, Andy—a quiet, introverted young man—works at his father Frederick’s ice rink, a job that follows the brutal arc of his family history: his mother was institutionalized and lobotomized, a fate he fears as much as he preserves. When Frederick dies suddenly on the ice, Andy encounters a family friend, Dr. Wallace Fiennes, the man directly responsible for his mother’s lobotomy. Wallace invites Andy to travel with him, casting him in several roles—photographer, journalist, and assistant—as they move from place to place in search of new subjects.
