Hans Müller is a German Jew who, after World War II, becomes one of many refugees disembarking in Haifa in 1949 and being placed in a crowded refugee camp. He bears the heavy weight of survivor guilt, a common burden among camp survivors, and this tension surfaces when, at one point, he mistakes a woman and some children for his murdered family. His fragility pushes him to seize the first chance to slip away from the camp’s watchful eyes.

On the city streets, he spots a policeman and panics, fleeing in a burst of fear that ends with the officer unconscious on the pavement. Detective Karni is on the case, and Hans’s agitation grows as he is confronted and questioned. The confrontation erupts into a violent attack, and Hans escapes once more, retreating into the countryside where his path crosses with Sabra, a teenage orphan, and Yehoshua Bresler, known as Josh, who offers to serve as a guide.

Hans skillfully feigns being an eccentric American eager to see Israel with his own eyes, and Josh is drawn into the act, offering companionship and mentorship. The man who once entertained crowds with his juggling begins to reveal a past life: he was a professional juggler, a detail that Josh persuades him to share and to pass on his skills to others. The journey becomes less about fleeing and more about finding a way to belong again.

Meanwhile, the pursuit by Detective Karni intensifies as the two travel together. As they travel, Josh sustains an injury when they wander into a minefield near a kibbutz; he is transported to the medical center there with a broken leg, forcing Hans to pause and reconsider his own choices while Josh recovers.

During this lull, Hans meets Ya’el, Ya’el, a resident of the kibbutz. There is a growing attraction between them, though Hans initially resists her pleas to stay and settle down. He weighs the weight of his past against the possibility of a calmer future, and slowly he begins to feel a sense of belonging in this small community.

As Josh mends, the hunt for Hans continues, and Karni closes in once more, determined to take him into custody. The fugitive’s fear returns, and he barricades himself in Ya’el’s room, gripping her rifle as a shield. Yet in a turning point marked by trust and intervention, Ya’el and Karni persuade him to acknowledge that he needs help and to surrender, marking a cautious step toward healing and reintegration after a life shadowed by fear and trauma.
