The film opens with Christopher Brand as Dean being dragged into a shallow grave in the dead of night by his wife, Kierston Wareing as Cassie Naylor, and the old farm hand David Bradley as Cooper. As they carry out a hurried burial, their actions are unseen by anyone except the eight-year-old Maisie Lloyd as Amy, who watches from a distance with wide eyes and a growing sense that something is terribly wrong.

Eight months later, the mood on Cassie’s farm is strained and weary. Cassie fights to keep the land and her family together, but her finances are tightening, and she struggles to maintain peace with her two daughters, Amy and Hannah. The burden is heavy enough that she can no longer rely on Cooper, the farmhand who has long been part of their rough-and-tumble routine. Into this precarious balance rides a persistent, unsettling presence: Terry Stone as Karsten Rabe, the neighboring farmer who visits with offers to buy the farm and to marry Cassie, both of which she rejects. The tension between the two men grows quickly, casting a shadow over Cassie’s attempts to steady the farm.

Cassie’s world is briefly upended by the arrival of Vincent Regan as Aden, an old friend of Dean who happens to be passing through. To protect her secret, Cassie tells Aden that Dean has left, but Aden’s practical instincts and easy confidence draw him into Cassie’s life just when she least needs another complication. After some persuasion from Amy, Cassie reluctantly agrees to let Aden stay the night. The next day, Aden offers to be of genuine use on the farm, proposing better deals and practical help, and Cassie agrees to keep him around—even if Hannah, Cassie’s sixteen-year-old daughter, suspects that Aden intends to insert himself into the family’s life in troubling ways.

As Karsten’s interest in Cassie deepens, his jealousy toward Aden becomes more obvious. He issues irrational threats, destroys one of Cassie’s calves, and blocks off the road, effectively cutting Cassie off from the outside world. Frustrated and fed up, Aden tells Cassie he will “talk to Karsten” to resolve the situation, but the moment is a turning point: Aden instead kills Karsten and his brother Noah, Jake Curran as Noah, in cold blood and severs the last ties to the outside world that Cassie might have relied on.

With Karsten and Noah out of the picture, life on the farm seems to settle for a moment. Aden proves useful in practical terms, helping Cassie secure a good deal on cattle feed and suggesting that she let go of Cooper, who has become costly. Cassie’s trust in Aden grows, and she begins to lean on him more heavily, even as Hannah grows wary of the stranger who seems to be insinuating himself into the family’s dynamic. Aden’s presence starts to feel less like help and more like control, especially when he uses his knowledge of Hannah’s personal history to assert his influence, reminding Hannah of Dean’s abuse and how it shaped her.

Hannah’s trust is shaken, and she confronts Aden, who responds with a brutal mix of charm and menace that leaves her shaken and furious. The confrontation culminates in a violent moment where Aden strikes Cassie, and she drives him from the property with a gun—an act that signals that she will do whatever it takes to protect her daughters. In the aftermath, Cassie finds Dean’s wedding ring among Aden’s belongings, an eerie sign that not all is as it seems. She goes to the grave with a shovel, trying to confirm whether Dean truly lies there, only to discover the grave is empty and the body is gone.

The farm’s fortunes take another brutal turn when Cassie and Cooper discover the bull lying dead, its throat slit. It is clear that the situation has spiraled beyond simple betrayal or family conflict. Cassie resolves to sell the farm to Karsten, but when she arrives, she finds not quiet negotiation but a scene of rotting bodies—Karsten and Noah—inhabiting the house, with Aden living there as if the farm were his to command. Cassie fights to escape with Amy, but Aden overpowers them and drags them back to the house.

In a revelatory moment, Aden exposes the full truth: Dean did not die in the grave. He had escaped and returned to the oil rigs, where he told Aden about the abuse of Hannah and his so-called “murder.” Aden makes it clear that his aim is to create a family with them, a twisted, violent fantasy grounded in fear and control. As the truth comes to light, Cassie, Hannah, and Amy confront their pasts and their futures together. Hannah’s secret is laid bare, and mother and daughter finally connect in a moment of raw honesty that binds them more tightly than fear ever did.

With the truth out in the open, the three women resolve to resist Aden’s attempt to “build a family” on fear. They devise a plan to turn the tables and rid themselves of him for good. The bond among Cassie, Hannah, and Amy deepens as they lure Aden toward a dangerous, isolated place on the farm. In a sudden, devastating moment, Amy pushes him into a slurry pit—its edges slick with cow excrement and methane. The escape route appears blocked as Aden struggles, but Cassie seizes a lighter and, with a desperate, determined resolve, lights the pit. The resulting explosion collapses the cavern into heat and flame, claiming Aden’s life while Cassie, Hannah, and Amy cling to each other, safe for now and united as a family.

In the end, the house is quiet but for the sound of their breathing, a hard-won peace settling over the three women who have faced unspeakable danger and endured. The bond formed in fear becomes the foundation of their future, and together they face whatever comes next with a steadiness that had been missing before Aden’s arrival. The film closes on a fragile, hopeful note: a family reclaimed, not by blood alone, but by choice, trust, and the shared will to survive.
