Cassie Grant, a young American woman, travels on foot through the English countryside and ends up in Ashby Wake. Her journey is abruptly interrupted when a car crushes her path, and the driver, Mrs. Marion Kirkman, rushes to get her medical help. The hospital exam reveals that Cassie has suffered memory loss from the accident—she recalls only her name and her homeland, but nothing about where she came from, who her family is, or why she is in England. The doctor explains that trauma can erase memory, and with time and care, she might regain it. Gripped by guilt and a sense of responsibility for the lonely girl she has found, Mrs. Kirkman offers Cassie a place to recover in the Kirkman home.

As Cassie settles into Ashby Wake, a quiet town with old stones and rumors, a deeper mystery begins to unfurl around her. She encounters people she feels she should know, yet cannot place, and she becomes convinced that she is drawn into something dangerous and larger than a simple amnesia plot. Among the inhabitants is a man named Dan Blakely, whom she believes she knows from somewhere, though no memory surfaces to confirm this connection. Cassie grows close to Mrs. Kirkman’s son, Michael, while her husband, Simon, an art historian, introduces her to a church in Glastonbury dating back to Early Christianity. This church, unearthed by two visitors to the Glastonbury Festival who died after falling through an open roof, holds a striking relief in stone. The relief depicts the crucifixion of Christ and shows a crowd of onlookers who appear to be watching the event with morbid fascination. The church’s mystery becomes a focal point for Cassie as she tries to piece together the fragments of her memory and the visions she begins to experience.

Over the following days, Cassie experiences vivid glimpses of the town’s possible futures. She starts recognizing individuals who seem to watch her from hidden corners, and she becomes obsessed with a peculiar auto mechanic, Frederick Michael Argyle. Argyle’s belongings include a scrapbook filled with newspaper clippings about abuse at a local orphanage—clippings that the townspeople once ignored. Cassie discovers that Argyle was one of the abused children, and in her visions he identifies with the young Michael. He is planning revenge against the townspeople who allowed the abuse to happen. Cassie senses that catastrophe is looming, but she struggles to convince anyone else to take her warnings seriously.

As her investigation deepens, Cassie learns about a secret order known as The Gathering. The relief in the church is revealed to illustrate this group of immortals who are doomed to witness catastrophes and murders for eternity, a modern echo of the Wandering Jew myth. The Gathering watches the world, unbothered by the sorrow they observe. The town’s priest and bishop discover this truth too, and the bishop rushes to tell Mr. Kirkman. A fateful car accident on the way claims the priest’s life, underscoring the unsettling presence of The Gathering. Yet Cassie’s visions intensify: she sees Argyle dragging a young boy into the orphanage’s former house while the town’s leaders watch with cruel detachment.

Cassie follows the threads of her visions into a moment of crisis. She discovers a photo in Michael’s collection that horrifies her and hints at the danger facing the Kirkman family. After Argyle’s plan escalates, the priest’s accident becomes a catalyst for the truth to spread through the town. Mr. Kirkman races home to shield his family, while Cassie attends the town fair, hoping to warn the authorities. Instead, she encounters Dan, who reveals himself as one of The Gathering and who has already killed the on-duty police officer. He explains that The Gathering has moved beyond passive observation, actively shaping tragedies to occur. Cassie manages to thwart Argyle’s attempt to blow up the festival crowd, but she cannot avert the brutal chain of abuse that Argyle endured or prevent the vengeance he seeks against his abusers.

A tense pursuit culminates in a dramatic confrontation, and Cassie sacrifices her life to save the Kirkman children. Mr. Kirkman arrives just in time to halt Argyle from harming his family. In the final, haunting moment, Cassie’s death is followed by a vision: she appears among The Gathering, watching Argyle’s death with tears on her face. Unlike the others, she has shown compassion and a wish to avert evil, and that mercy grants her a chance at peace, ending her lifelong wandering. The twist-laden conclusion reinforces the film’s meditation on memory, guilt, and the paradox of beings who exist to witness humanity’s darkest moments.
