Spoilers ahead
The film flips between two realities in a playful, wry embrace of gamer culture: a dorm room where a group of friends are deep inside a sprawling role‑playing game, and the fantasy world their in‑game avatars inhabit. In the fantasy thread, the party—led by The Gamemaster and joined by some memorable characters—pursues a heroic quest to defeat The Shadow and rescue Paula / The Princess. The adventure feels epic on the surface, full of magic, danger, and grand schemes, but it unfolds on a threadbare campus stage where the players’ real lives intrude with snacks, interruptions, and inside jokes.
