One night, a single mother, Carla Moran, endures a brutal assault in her Los Angeles bungalow when an invisible force violently violates her. The shockwaves of this terrifying incident ripple through her life as a series of unsettling poltergeist-like events force Carla and her children to seek refuge with her best friend Cindy Nash. When they return to their own home, a new danger emerges: Carla’s car inexplicably loses control in traffic, nearly taking her life. This sequence of frightening occurrences pushes Carla toward professional help, and she agrees to see a psychiatrist, Dr. Sneiderman, in the hope of making sense of the unexplainable.

Carla’s first sessions gradually reveal a tapestry of childhood traumas—religious discipline, past sexual abuse, and the complex shadows of early motherhood—that complicate her present distress. Dr. Sneiderman remains cautious, suggesting that the terrifying events could be manifestations of deep-seated psychological wounds. Yet he keeps an open mind, honoring Carla’s wish to pursue whatever might explain her experiences. The danger escalates when Carla is attacked again, this time in front of her children, leaving her son to intervene as electricity-like discharges lash out and fracture his wrist. The violence intensifies, and Carla’s trust in conventional explanations begins to fray.

Her romantic partner, Jerry Anderson, witnesses a harrowing confrontation where Carla is restrained by the entity, subjected to rape and furtive, invisible touches. When Jerry reacts in fear, Carla’s son—the boy who watched—mistakes Jerry’s reaction for harm toward his mother, ending Carla’s relationship with Jerry in its wake.

Facing the impasse, Carla agrees to participate in an elaborate experiment designed by Cooley and his team. They construct a full-scale replica of Carla’s home to lure the entity into a controlled trap, intending to freeze it with liquid helium. The experiment begins with careful coordination, but the entity takes control of the helium jets, turning the trap against Carla. She stands firm, declaring that the entity may kill her, but it will never possess her. In a climactic moment, the tanks explode, flooding the room with liquid helium. Sneiderman arrives just in time to pull Carla to safety as the interior fills with cold, shimmering ice. The team discovers that the entity has been trapped within a massive block of ice, which shatters and dissolves as it tries to break free, only to vanish soon after.

Dr. Weber’s skepticism lingers, but Dr. Cooley recognizes that Carla has provided a crucial, tangible witness. Yet Weber chooses denial, retreating into disbelief despite what transpired. When Carla returns to her house the next day, the front door swings open on its own, and she is confronted by a disembodied voice that lingers in the home: a chilling threat that underscores the threat’s persistence. Calmly, she walks outside, gathers her family, and leaves for Texas. The closing intertitle confirms their relocation, signaling a fragile sense of safety, even as Carla continues to experience occasional residual attacks that grow less frequent and severe over time.
