The Constable 2013

Lam Kwok-kuen is a veteran police officer who has spent many years in the force, earning respect for his steady dedication and a string of admirable achievements. He now devotes himself to caring for his intellectually disabled son, Chung, at home, balancing duty with a quiet, personal responsibility that shapes every decision he makes.

To help with Chung’s care, Lam hires Lin Tsui-yan to watch over him while he goes to work. This arrangement unsettles Tsui-yan’s boyfriend, Chow Gong-hong, who grows uneasy and worries that there might be something more than a professional arrangement between Lam and Tsui-yan. The tension thickens when Chung suffers a heart attack and dies in his sleep, a tragedy that strains the fragile balance in Lam’s life. In the wake of Chung’s death, Tsui-yan continues to spend a lot of time at Lam’s house, fueling Gong-hong’s suspicions about an affair and prompting him to urge Tsui-yan to break away and return to her hometown.

Meanwhile, Gong-hong owes money to a gangster named Dah Kin. Dah Kin presses Gong-hong to come along if he wants a way to repay his debts, and this duo, along with Dah Kin’s gang, hatches a plan to rob a bank. In the months after his son’s death, Lam asks for a transfer from the transport unit to the criminal investigation team, seeking a more direct hand in policing the kind of crime that endangers his city and his own sense of responsibility.

The case comes into sharper focus on patrol when Lam spots Gong-hong and Dah Kin’s gang gearing up for the bank job. He orders the would-be robbers to step out of their car, but they respond with gunfire, forcing Lam to call for backup. A frantic car chase spills into an abandoned warehouse, where Lam continues the pursuit while other officers close in. After a tense confrontation, the police move in on the gang and Dah Kin is arrested, along with his crew. Gong-hong sustains a severe injury after a fall and is also detained, marking a decisive, if costly, outcome for the operation.

Back at the station, Lam opens a letter from Tsui-yan. In a quiet, telling moment, Tsui-yan reveals that she has returned to her hometown and is now teaching dance to children, offering a poignant contrast to the danger and complexity that defined the pursuit and a reminder of the human threads that connect everyone involved.
