The Chase 1966

In the mid-1960s, in a small town in Tarl County, Texas, where banker Val Rogers E.G. Marshall wields a great deal of influence, word comes that native son Bubber Reeves Robert Redford and another man have escaped from prison. Sheriff Calder Marlon Brando, who continues to believe in Bubber’s innocence, expects him to return to his hometown, where Bubber’s lonely wife Anna Reeves Jane Fonda is involved in a romantic affair with Jake, James Fox Bubber’s best friend and Val Rogers’ son. The stage is set for a tense confrontation between loyalty, guilt, and the rough pulse of a town that can swing from cordial neighbors to hostile accusers in a single night.

As the rumor mill churns, Calder tries to hold the peace while surveillance and suspicion tighten like a noose. The community is split: some feel the accused deserve a fair chance, others want swift retribution. In this charged atmosphere, Emily Stewart Janice Rule openly flirts with Damon Fuller Richard Bradford in front of her cuckolded husband Edwin Stewart Robert Duvall, exposing the messy web of desire, betrayal, and social pressure that underpins every rumor. The town’s mood grows corrosive as alcohol loosens tongues and tempers alike, and the line between justice and vengeance blurs under hot lights and louder voices.

Bubber, meanwhile, slips back into town and hides at an auto junkyard, the scene of half-lit promises and tense loyalties. Anna and Jake step forward to help him, and their plan draws the whole town along in a roving procession of gossip, bravado, and alcohol-fueled bravado. The pursuit becomes a chaotic mockery of order, with the junkyard set aflame and an explosion tearing through the night, mortally wounding Jake. Calder, battered but steadfast, reaches Bubber and, as he guides him toward the jail steps, is confronted by one of the vigilantes, Archie Steve Ihnat. Archie pulls a hidden gun and shoots Bubber multiple times, shattering the fragile balance of the town in a single, brutal act.

The morning after the confrontation is loud with the echo of burned-out loyalties and unspoken regrets. Sick of the town and its people, Calder and Ruby Angie Dickinson decide to walk away, leaving behind the embers of a case that proved too much for a community built on fragile myths and stubborn pride.
