The Wrong Trousers 1993

Wallace gifts his dog, Gromit, a pair of robotic automated Techno-Trousers for his birthday to take him on walks, which irritates Gromit. What starts as a playful gadget soon spirals into mischief as the trousers gain a life of their own, zipping through walls and ceilings with comic precision and turning Wallace’s affection for invention into a potential headache for everyone around him.

To pay his debts, Wallace lends a room to a penguin who befriends him and quietly drives Gromit out of the house. The visitor’s genial façade hides a clever plan, and he secretly rewires the trousers for remote control, transforming a quirky contraption into a tool for mischief and theft.

That intruder is Feathers McGraw, a criminal mastermind who disguises himself as a chicken by donning a red rubber glove on his head. The disguise is simple, yet effective, masking his true identity as he weaves into Wallace’s life with unsettling ease.

Feathers wastes no time exploiting the situation. He forces Wallace into the trousers, sending him on a dizzying trek through town to tire him out and then back to bed, leaving Gromit puzzled and increasingly wary. The penguin’s calm exterior hides the dangerous spark of his plan.

Gromit soon uncovers Feathers’ scheme: to steal a precious blue diamond from the city museum. While Wallace sleeps, Feathers marches him through the town to the museum and infiltrates the building, where he seizes the diamond but triggers the alarm, waking Wallace.

Back at the house, Feathers traps Wallace and Gromit in a wardrobe at gunpoint, a tense moment that underscores how far the ruse has gone. In a burst of ingenuity, Gromit rewires the Techno-Trousers to break open the wardrobe, and the chase spills onto a model train set that turns their living space into a miniature battlefield.

Wallace manages to disarm Feathers and free himself from the trousers, and the pursuit culminates in a collision between Feathers’ train and the trousers. Gromit corners Feathers, sealing the capture with a makeshift milk bottle trap, ensuring the criminal’s downfall.

Feathers is handed over to the police and imprisoned at the city zoo, while Wallace settles his debts with the reward money. The two friends, tired but triumphant, share a quiet moment with cheese inside the house, savoring victory after a day of clever gambits and near disaster.

In a final, cheeky wink, the discarded Techno-Trousers reboot in the dustbin and wander off toward the sunset, hinting at more adventures to come. The warmth of the story is carried by the iconic performance of the voice behind Wallace, Peter Sallis.
