In Antarctica, the Adélie penguins honor a mating ritual: the male searches for a pebble and, on the night of the full moon, presents it to the female he loves, hoping she will accept and they will become mates. Hubie, Martin Short, a shy and good-hearted penguin, loves Marina, Annie Golden, the rookery’s most beautiful bird, and it seems she feels the same, but Drake, Tim Curry, a muscular and scheming rival who always seems to get his way, is determined to win her over as well. When they finally discuss their feelings, Hubie cannot locate a suitable pebble. He looks to the stars for luck and is granted a radiant emerald cube, a gift that fills him with hope and a louder sense of possibility.
The next morning, Hubie hurries to Marina, only to be intercepted by Drake who demands the emerald for himself. Hubie refuses, and Drake hurls him into the cold water. He narrowly escapes a hungry leopard seal and clings to a fragment of ice, only to be carried away from his homeland. Three days later, Hubie is rescued by humans and brought aboard a ship headed for a zoo, where he meets Rocko, Jim Belushi, a gruff and feisty Northern rockhopper penguin. Through the emerald, Hubie sees Drake pressing Marina into a forced choice—a deal that would exile her if she does not comply. Determined to return to Marina, Hubie and Rocko hatch a plan to escape. To keep Rocko by his side, Hubie spins a tale of an imaginary flying penguin named Waldo, a ruse that Rocky initially suspects yet chooses to overlook because of his loyalty and the growing bond between them. After a tense escape from the ship and a perilous leopard seal encounter, their journey becomes a test of friendship and resolve as a pod of killer whales threatens them and the pebble slips from Hubie’s grip, with Rocko going missing in the chaos.
Hubie presses on to confront Drake, and a fierce confrontation ends with Hubie prevailing. Reunited with Marina, Hubie’s triumph feels complete, yet the dangers aren’t over. Rocko, who survived the killer whale attack, unexpectedly returns to stand with them. Drake resurfaces to wreck further trouble, but his downfall comes when a tower collapses and buries him beneath rubble. In the escape, Rocko finally takes to the skies, rescuing Hubie and Marina. They reach the mating ceremony with the emerald pebble in hand, and Rocko reveals that he preserved the pebble for this moment. Marina accepts Hubie’s proposal, declaring that her love for him surpasses any stone, and the two penguins become mates. Rocko chooses to remain in Antarctica, where he teaches Hubie and Marina’s future offspring how to fly, ensuring their lineage carries forward with hope and wings.
