In a small Bulgarian provincial town during the 1980s, factory worker Vasil ‘Vasko’ Georgiev finds himself entangled in the demands of a local Communist Party agent Nikolai Urumov who wants him to monitor and report on his father-in-law, Bai Dan, the town’s self-styled “King of Backgammon.” Bai Dan is accused by the authorities of running an illegal workshop where he repairs bicycles and crafts backgammon sets. Caught between loyalty to family and the pressure of state control, Vasko makes a bold moral choice.

Driven by a moral dilemma, he emigrates beyond the Iron Curtain to Western Europe with his wife Yana Georgieva and his son Aleksander ‘Sashko’ Georgiev (as a child, Blagovest Mutafchiev). The family crosses into Italy but faces the harsh possibility of lengthy detention in a bleak refugee camp until a desperate arrangement allows them to be smuggled into Germany. The journey marks the end of one chapter and the long, uncertain road toward a new life.

The film then moves to 2007, opening with the jolt of an autobahn car accident that claims Vasko and Yana’s lives on their way back to Bulgaria—the first return together since their exile. Their son, Sashko, survives but wakes in a hospital with amnesia. Determined to recover a past he cannot recall, his grandfather Bai Dan travels to Germany to help reconnect him with memory—starting by teaching him backgammon. When Sashko resists at first, Bai Dan urges him to step beyond the hospital doors and embark on a tangible journey on a tandem bicycle. This odyssey invites them to revisit Bulgaria, confront memories, and explore romance and a brighter, more hopeful future.
