The Way Steel Was Tempered 1988

Leo is a steel worker who longs for a carefree life, but the mill’s profit-driven management clamps down on every move, pressing him and his comrades as the industry teeters on the edge of a bubble that could burst. The outlook for Leo and his peers grows increasingly bleak and uncertain as the factory’s priorities shift away from their daily realities toward looming financial risks.

During this turbulent period at work, he encounters a woman named Verica and becomes involved in an extramarital affair, a turning point that reverberates through his personal life.

Back home, his wife, Ruža, grows fed up with the cheating and dishonesty, files for divorce, and returns to live with her parents, leaving Leo to confront the consequences of his actions. As Ruža closes that chapter, she crosses paths with Mišel, the head of security at Leo’s steel mill and a photographer with a soldier’s past, a meeting that intensifies the emotional fallout surrounding Leo’s decisions.

Leo’s jealousy ignites a violent outburst that costs him his job, a blow that pushes him toward a harsher path. In a moment of anger he even attempts to topple a monument in the town square, and his reckoning lands him in prison. Yet fate takes an odd turn: after serving time, he somehow finds himself back at the steel mill, because the factory and the prison have a deal that uses prisoners as laborers, blurring the line between punishment and work.

The arrival of foreign business partners shifts the town’s gaze toward the mill’s storied exterior. They are captivated by the historic appearance of the factory and the tenacity of its workers, and they decide to preserve the site as a piece of history. These investors, passionate collectors of socialist realism, take a liking to Leo and treat him as a “perfect specimen”—a symbolic beacon of the era they admire.

Years pass, and Leo returns in a striking, almost triumphant way, driving a brand-new Cadillac car as a testament to the changes sweeping through the plant, the town, and perhaps his own life.
