In Saint-Juire-Champgillon, a remote village in the Vendée with long-standing left-wing traditions, Julien Dechaumes, Pascal Greggory, has inherited the manor and the land and has just been elected mayor, even as he spends a lot of time in Paris with his mistress. There he pushes hard to secure a grant from the Ministry of Culture to build a state-of-the-art sports and media centre, believing that success on this front will bolster his standing and sharpen his chances of moving into national politics under the socialist banner. This bid for prestige is meant to breathe new life into the local scene and project a modern face to a community with deep roots.
