Two aunts hire Margarita to educate their wild nephew, Pablo Saldaña, who has spent his life on a rural mountain ranch and knows little of civilization. If he remains uneducated, the relatives threaten to strip him of his rightful inheritance to the sprawling hacienda.

Through patient instruction, Margarita helps Pablo to read and write, while he teaches her to ride, hunt, and navigate the rugged terrain. As they spend more time together, a tender romance blossoms, built on trust and shared discovery.

As the family gathers to test Pablo’s sanity and fitness to inherit, Margarita recognizes a former lover in the lawyer who attends the proceedings. The shock stirs Pablo’s fear of betrayal—an echo of his mother’s experience—and the relatives persuade a psychologist to declare him unfit. Even when the psychologist sees through their manipulation, Margarita cannot ease Pablo’s pain and leaves him. Yet his aunts intervene, helping him understand that beyond God and death there is a third force: love, or the third word. With that realization, Pablo races after Margarita to win her back.
