Albin Mercier [Jacques Charrier], a solitary French journalist, is sent to Germany to write about the noted novelist Andreas Hartmann [Walther Reyer], who lives in a village outside Munich. Albin rents a quiet flat in the same village and, through Hartmann’s French wife Hélène [Stéphane Audran], becomes acquainted with the writer and the couple’s circle of friends. The story follows his quiet curiosity as it grows into a dark undercurrent of fixation, driven by a desire to uncover what lies beneath their outwardly harmonious marriage.

Through the course of his stay, Albin becomes consumed with the idea that there is a hidden fracture in the couple’s life. He makes advances to Hélène, who tactfully rejects him. Undeterred, he starts to spy on her, convinced that she is having an affair. The tension thickens as he records glimpses of the couple’s private moments and searches for proof that would confirm his suspicions.

Eventually, Albin believes he has found the proof he seeks: compromising photographs of Hélène with her lover, which he presents to her. Hélène insists, in a bid to protect her world, that Andreas knows of the affair and pleads with Albin not to show the pictures to her husband, explaining that their marriage has provided a steady anchor after years of instability. The revelation stands in for a larger moral reckoning, and Albin’s intrusion into their lives reaches a breaking point.

Albin then confronts Andreas with the photographs. In a flash of rage, Hartmann stabs Hélène to death and immediately turns himself over to the police. The tragedy forces Albin to confront the consequences of his own scheme; he attempts to redeem himself by confessing his role in the events, but the police ignore his admission and his suffering goes unacknowledged.

In the final voice-over, Albin reflects on the cost of his meddling, noting that he could not continue as a journalist after what happened. The narrative closes with a somber meditation on intrusion, guilt, and the impossibility of turning back the clock after crossing a line that cannot be uncrossed.
