The 317th Platoon 1965

In 1954, amid the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, the 317th Platoon—a mix of Laotian suppletive troops, a French officer, and several NCOs—receives orders to push toward the Tao-Tsai post in North Cambodia, with the aim of reaching friendly ground and eventually evacuating toward Kratieh on the Mekong.

The mission is led by the fresh Second-Lieutenant Torrens Jacques Perrin and the seasoned Adjutant Willsdorff Bruno Cremer, an Alsatian who was forced into service in the German Wehrmacht and fought on the Russian front. Their partnership anchors the platoon as it threads through danger, relying on discipline and shared history to navigate unseen threats.

Among the NCOs, Le sergent Roudier Pierre Fabre is mortally wounded in an early clash sparked by his officer’s zeal, a costly reminder of the volatility of frontline leadership. The unit also includes Le caporal Perrin Manuel Zarzo and Le sergent supplétif Ba Kut Boramy Tioulong, soldiers who symbolize the diverse makeup of the platoon and its reliance on steady, practical know-how to survive the trek.

As they push through marshes and the tropical forests of Cambodia, the troops place their trust in Willsdorff’s cautious judgment, guiding them largely by proxy as they maneuver with limited supplies and dwindling hope. Parachuted drops bring meager rations and equipment, but part of the load also falls into enemy lines, heightening the peril and tightening the scrutiny of every move.

Tragedy strikes when fatalities occur, and Lt Torrens ultimately dies, leaving the group under the heavier burden of survival and the burden of leadership shifted toward Willsdorff. In the wake of loss, Willsdorff directs a difficult withdrawal, choosing to leave the fallen officer behind and seeking refuge with mountain tribes to safeguard the remaining men and plot a safer route forward. The journey underscores themes of endurance, loyalty, and the quiet strength found in adaptive leadership amid a brutal landscape.
