Freshman Trixie Stone accuses her ex-boyfriend Jason Underhill of raping her at a party, and the town’s quick verdict leans toward Jason, who insists the encounter was consensual. The accusation fractures loyalties as neighbors, classmates, and families take sides, and the narrative follows how the rumor mill reshapes lives. The tension is mirrored by the adults around Trixie, including Daniel Stone, a mild-mannered comic book artist with a rough upbringing, and Laura Stone, a college professor whose personal choices become entwined with the case. Jason’s reputation, and the future he hoped for, begin to crumble as the community’s judgment closes in.
Jason’s life, seemingly ruined by the accusation, ends tragically when he jumps from a bridge, dying by suicide. Yet the tragedy doesn’t settle the matter, because suspicion quickly shifts toward Trixie, who is accused of pushing him. The town’s suspicion reignites, and Trixie finds herself fleeing to the Yup’ik region of Alaska, a place connected to Daniel Stone through family history. Daniel and Laura eventually track down the young woman in Alaska, attempting to understand what happened and to uncover the truth behind the escalating cycle of blame and fear.
In a dramatic turn, Laura confesses to Daniel that she was present when Jason died. Jason, intoxicated and agitated, lunged at Laura because Trixie’s life was allegedly wrecking his own. Laura reached for his hand, but she ultimately let go, leaving Jason to fall. The confession clears Trixie of wrongdoing, yet it reveals Laura’s morally complex role in the tragedy. The revelations ripple through the family and the town, reframing who was innocent and who bore guilt.
The novel continually juxtaposes the main plot with Daniel’s latest comic, The Tenth Circle, which runs parallel to the events and themes of the story. The inserted comic mirrors the characters’ journeys, deepening the exploration of truth, memory, and the consequences of desire and reputation. Inside the narrative, a hidden message adds another layer of meaning:
Nothing is easier than self-deceit, for what each man wishes that he also believes to be true — DEMOSTHENES
As the pages unfold, the tension between judgment and mercy persists, and the ending emphasizes a fragile, painful reconciliation: a father is reunited with his daughter, after a harrowing ascent from the depths of personal and communal hell. The book uses this dual structure—the realist drama and the comic insert—to probe how families cope when blame, love, and truth collide.
