9/Tenths 2006

Set in a not-too-distant future, when terrorist attacks surge and cities bear the heaviest burden, Jessica, Gabrielle Anwar, and her husband William, Henry Ian Cusick, flee the urban chaos and drive hundreds of miles to a newly purchased ranch that promises solitude and safety. Jessica is wary of leaving behind the life she knows, while William clings to a hopeful fantasy of quiet, self-reliant living far from the noise and danger of the capital.

On arrival, they discover Elias, Dave Baez, already living in the house, calmly butchering a freshly killed animal in the kitchen. Elias explains, in broken English, that he was the caretaker for the previous owner and was promised he could remain as a reward for his services. William dismisses him as a trespasser, while Elias sees the couple as outsiders who have intruded on his domain.

As the dispute over the property thickens, it becomes clear that William is out of his element in this rural, hands-on world. Even simple tasks, like fixing a broken water heater, prove beyond his reach, prompting his sharp, telling confession:

I pay people to do these things for me.

Before the tension can resolve, a fragmentary emergency radio broadcast crackles to life, revealing that an extraordinarily large terrorist attack has struck the world around them. The trio is plunged into chilling isolation, cut off from civilization and unsure whether anyone else is alive anywhere. The familiar boundaries between safety, privilege, and survival blur, and the danger feels immediate even without a direct threat to their property. Civilization as they know it may have ended.

With no one else to lean on, the balance of power shifts. Elias, once seen as a subordinate caretaker, reveals practical ingenuity and becomes essential to their survival.
