Antero Rousku, Kari-Pekka Toivonen, a hardware store worker, and his friend Raninen, Aku Hirviniemi, anchor the story. Rousku lives with Karita, Minttu Mustakallio, and their teenage daughter Jessica, Emilia Karilampi. The film bypasses the Varasto epilogue, presenting Raninen as unemployed and financially strained rather than a lottery winner, and it shows Rousku also losing his job due to his abrasive manner and poor customer service.

Together, they launch a rough-and-ready construction venture, attempting to steal customers from their communist competitor Jylhäkorpi, Vesa Vierikko, and to pilfer supplies from Kataja’s hardware store, Esko Salminen. Their lack of professional skill quickly becomes evident as project after project fails, turning the story into a satirical look at Finnish workers’ perceived incompetence and laziness in contrast with the supposed diligence of foreign labor.

As schemes escalate, they discover that smuggling alcohol from Tallinn is far more profitable than renovation work. The windfall is substantial, but it attracts the attention of the authorities, and they eventually manage to dodge prison charges. Rousku is then compelled to marry Karita, while Raninen begins a romance with an Estonian police officer, adding further twists to their tangled lives. Ritva, Karita’s mother, Hannele Lauri, contends with Rousku but ultimately becomes the business’s accountant, indulges in karaoke, dates the store manager, and offers Jessica practical life advice.

The film closes on a note of precarious success as Raninen’s girlfriend reveals she is pregnant, leaving the characters to confront the costs of their risky choices and the evolving dynamics of family, loyalty, and ambition.
