Francesca Moretti is an Italian-American writer living in New York. Her mother, Sofia Moretti, a famous Italian painter, now lives in Rome and is suffering from blindness and aging-related frailty. When Francesca learns that her mother’s condition is worsening, she reluctantly decides to return to Italy, revisiting painful memories from her past.
Back in Italy, the film invites viewers into a space where reality, dream, and memory blur together. Francesca revisits moments from her youth, especially the complex and often exacting relationship with her mother, a brilliant artist who demanded much and offered inspiration in equal measure. These memories unfold through a series of surreal encounters and emotionally charged fragments, weaving a dreamlike atmosphere that unsettles straightforward narration.
As the two women reconnect, the old tensions resurface and the bond between them becomes a focal point of the journey. Sofia’s blindness acts as both a literal limitation and a metaphor for the difficulty of truly seeing one another—of recognizing Francesca for who she is, not just who she was expected to be. The film uses this tension to probe questions about identity, artistic vocation, and the choices that shape a life.
Throughout the journey, the boundary between past and present grows porous, and Francesca’s sense of self is tested by memory rather than definitive answers. The narrative steers away from neat conclusions, choosing instead to linger in the fragmented, emotional landscape of memory, where what is recalled is inseparable from how it feels. In the end, the film remains deliberately open, inviting contemplation rather than resolution and implying that embracing memory’s imperfect clarity can be a form of understanding.
