The Silver Fleet 1943

Early in the Second World War, the Nazis overrun the Netherlands and seize control of a submarine shipyard where Ralph Richardson plays Jaap van Leyden, the shipyard’s chief engineer. The German Gestapo “Protector” Esmond Knight Von Schiffer presses him to cooperate with the occupiers. While weighing his options, van Leyden passes by a grade school and overhears a teacher telling her class about Piet Hein, a Dutch hero who captured the Spanish silver fleet and inspired his compatriots to keep fighting for freedom. The tale stirs a spark of defiance in him, even as the weight of occupation presses down around him.

Feeling the pressure to appear compliant while secretly resisting, van Leyden begins a covert campaign of sabotage. He leaves notes and graffiti signed under his nom de guerre, Piet Hein, signaling resistance while maintaining the surface of collaboration. He also quietly enables a dozen Dutch engineers to hijack a submarine during its trial run and sail it to England, taking along its captured Nazi crew. These bold moves are carefully chosen to undermine the occupiers without tipping his hand to those around him.

As the occupation continues, a second submarine is completed, and van Leyden plants a bomb in its engine room, timed to explode the next morning. He returns home to host a dinner party and manages to persuade several high-ranking Nazi officials to accompany him on the submarine’s maiden sea trial, using hospitality and congenial hosting to mask a deeper, deadly plan. The tension builds as the clock ticks toward a fateful test, with danger lurking in every corner of the household and the vessel alike.

The plan nearly collapses when Dutch resistance fighter Charles Victor Bastiaan Peters slips into van Leyden’s house undetected and threatens to shoot him as a Quisling. In a tense exchange, van Leyden convinces Peters that he is Piet Hein, allowing the ruse to continue. Peters, in a fatal act, shoots himself and hands the pistol to van Leyden, a calculated move intended to protect the Piet Hein identity and keep the ruse intact as the final gamble proceeds.

The next morning, during the underwater trial, the submarine’s mission ends in catastrophe: van Leyden’s bomb detonates and floods the engine room, dooming everyone aboard. The elaborate ruse unravels in a moment of explosive consequence, yet the events leave a lasting imprint — a legend of resistance tied to the figure of Piet Hein that outlives the doomed mission and the lives lost in the attempt.
