Spoilers ahead
Mavis Nugent, Ellen McIntosh, a young widow in Greenwich, London, just before Christmas, drops her children outside the cinema so she can work at a local haberdashers. A man in the cinema queue approaches and hands out handfuls of what the children briefly believe are sweets, a small gesture that will have much larger consequences. By the end of the film, the cinema staff discover that several children have fallen unconscious, their bodies weakened by barbiturate poisoning. The incident triggers a police response, and an investigation is launched under the watchful eye of Inspector Duffy, Bernard Archard. The case quickly deepens as the clues accumulate.
