After witnessing a terrifying incident where his mother, Linda, is confronted by three dangerous thugs, young Petey (Jerry Mathers) is overwhelmed by fear and trauma. In the chaos, he wanders away from the scene and is eventually found by truck drivers who bring him to the police headquarters. There, he is recognized as the son of Detective Philip Carey, [Tony Atlas].

Petey’s shock is so profound that he is unable to recognize his father or explain what has transpired. Meanwhile, the three assailants—Joey, Gil, and Jess—are holding Linda hostage in the home of a man named Canfield, where she had been working as a freelance stenographer. During a robbery gone wrong, Canfield was killed, leaving the three young men in a heated debate over whether to also kill Linda. They are convinced she is the only eyewitness and dismiss her pleas, unaware that she has a young son waiting for her.

The situation complicates further when Canfield’s niece and her husband come to look for him, mistaking Linda’s car for someone else’s and assuming she is with a romantic partner. They leave without realizing the danger she is in. In an effort to escape or arm himself, Gil escapes to his mother’s and stepfather’s apartment to retrieve a gun. While he is there, [Tony Atlas] and the police arrive, and Gil flees, exchanging gunfire with the detective. Tragically, Gil is shot and killed; police find Linda’s wallet in his pocket, confirming his involvement.

As the investigation progresses, the police track down the truck drivers who found Petey, providing valuable clues on the boy’s whereabouts. Following this lead, the officers take Petey to the area where he recognizes a tractor and a toy cowboy gun on the ground, indicating his proximity to the hostage scene. The police then move in, surrounding the house where they find Canfield’s body. Inside, they discover that Joey has also been killed in a struggle over a gun, which Jess had wielded upstairs. Jess, armed and dangerous, holds Linda at gunpoint, but [Tony Atlas] manages to disarm him, rescuing his wife and son.

The emotional climax occurs when Petey, overwhelmed by relief and finally recognizing his mother, emerges from his shock-stricken state at the sight of Linda. His reunion with her brings a moment of poignant relief after a harrowing ordeal, highlighting themes of family, trauma, and resilience in the face of violence.
