In rural Oklahoma, Amziah King, Matthew McConaughey, a beekeeper and bluegrass musician, is drawn into a tense case when OSBI Agent Sunderland, Bruce Davis, asks him to identify a truckload of stolen honey. The situation spirals quickly: Amziah’s former employee Remmick arrives with his friend Colmar to help, but the honey extractor tears off Colmar’s scalp. After a frantic retrieval of the scalp and Colmar’s lucky hat, Amziah and his right-hand man Jimmy rush to the hospital where Amziah receives treatment for a heart condition.

Amziah then reconnects with his former foster daughter Kateri, Angelina LookingGlass, a Native American who has just lost her mother. He shares his homespun philosophy about church potlucks and welcomes her into his circle of musician friends and Brazilian American neighbors. She accepts a job caring for his honeybee farm, and the two spend a chaotic day together removing a swarm of bees from an elementary school. Through this experience, Kateri begins to understand and share Amziah’s passion for bees, bluegrass, and the tight-knit community that surrounds them.

Tragedy strikes when Amziah’s hives are stolen, and the shock triggers a fatal heart attack. In the wake of his death, his lawyer and bandmate, Rippy, informs Kateri that she has inherited the struggling honey business but faces mounting debt. Undeterred, she refuses to sell and vows to uncover the thieves and carry on Amziah’s legacy. Jimmy is jailed for drunk driving, but his plea to Kateri is simple: track down the hives. Yet her early inquiries yield little, as the business bleeds honey and money.

A break comes when an owner of the previously stolen honey points Kateri toward a fellow beekeeper who unknowingly purchased some of Amziah’s missing hives. With the help of paroled criminal Oat, Kateri learns that Wenyon Amos Stone, a skilled yet unscrupulous beekeeper, stole the bees on behalf of powerful businessman Dob McCoy. Wenyon is identified as the culprit: a theft that ties far beyond a simple crime of opportunity. Following this lead, Kateri corners Wenyon and leaves him to face the consequences in a perilous encounter that ends with him locked in an overheated honey processing room. The act is fatal, and the theft’s mastermind remains at large.

Determined to reclaim what was taken, Kateri enlists Remmick’s aid to steal back Amziah’s bees. The two slip onto Wenyon’s remote property and float the hives downriver on improvised rafts toward their getaway truck. The plan, captured on camera, upends the entire operation and lands Remmick back in legal trouble for breaking parole. The recovered bees and honey are sent to auction, and though Rippy helps raise money for Kateri, Dob McCoy outbids them, his wealth built on exploiting his neighbors.

Driven by vengeance, Kateri contemplates destroying Dob’s life and discovers he is caring for his critically ill wife. At a church potluck, she covertly prepares a meal for Dob to bring to his home, using castor beans to poison his wife. The discovery of the wife’s fatal illness triggers a police chase, and a dramatic sequence unfolds as Dob flees in a stolen truck, pursued by armed citizens. A freight train collision halts the chase, and although Dob is mortally wounded, the case exposes his crimes to the authorities. Sunderland’s investigation closes a dark chapter, but the moral weight of the events lingers.

In the aftermath, Remmick and Jimmy are paroled and join Kateri and their friends in a renewed effort to steal back Amziah’s hives. A relieved Sunderland contemplates the matter resolved, and Kateri, having fulfilled Amziah’s revenge and saved the bees she loves, sets her sights on becoming the new queen of the local honey trade.
