Tshering Euden plays [Sangay], a 16-year-old high school student who lives with her widowed and controlling father, Dorji Gyeltshen as Ap Atsara, a performer who entertains bazaar crowds by embodying the sacred festival character Atsara and who also carves wooden phalli for rituals. The story centers on a girl intensely aware of the strain between tradition and her own budding desires, a tension that is amplified by the small world she inhabits where reputation and duty hold strong sway.

Sangay faces ongoing bullying at school, a harassment that is intensified by the public visibility of her father’s work. In parallel, she begins an affair with Singye as Passa, a married butcher whose low social status complicates his appeal. Passa is initially warm and seductive, offering a glimpse of escape from a life bounded by local norms and economic limitations. Yet as Sangay hesitates to run away with him to the capital city, Thimphu, his attitude shifts; he begins to berate her, a change that exposes how power, gender, and social standing intersect to control her choices.

The relationship leaves Sangay withdrawn and increasingly depressed. She falls four years behind her peers academically, and the strain spills over into her school life and home. A psychologist visits Sangay’s school and urges the adults to separate the girl from her lover, a intervention that catalyzes a fierce confrontation with her father. Dorji Gyeltshen as Ap Atsara quarrels with Passa and nearly kills him, a moment that reveals the fragility of the girl’s protections and the volatility of a family shackled to tradition and pride.

Sangay longs to leave with Passa, but the barrier is not only logistical; it is psychological and procedural, a web of fear, shame, and coercion. The turning point arrives when Passa rapes Sangay during a clandestine meeting, a brutal act that shatters her sense of safety and dignity. After the assault, she endures humiliation that stretches into a prolonged violation of trust and autonomy, a wound that illuminates the brutal costs of systems that police female sexuality.

The aftermath leads to a shocking act of violence: Sangay kills Passa with a wooden board. When she returns home, with her father away, she acts with a mix of desperation and resolve, smashing all of the carved wooden phalli that line their space. The sequence culminates in a devastating decision: Sangay takes her own life, a final, tragic rupture that underscores the film’s unflinching look at despair. The scene closes with a stark, almost ritualistic image—phalli stained with blood—an unsettling emblem of the violence that has threaded through Sangay’s life and the traditions that surrounded her.

Throughout, the film unfolds as a patient, often austere examination of how rigid social codes and symbolic rituals can contribute to vulnerability and harm. It portrays a girl who moves through a world where personal longing is checked by cultural expectations, and where the consequences of male aggression and parental control culminate in irreversible tragedy. The performances anchor a story that is at once intimate and critical, inviting reflection on the price of silence, the fragility of innocence, and the complex intersection of memory, ritual, and power in a tightly wound community.
