Jennie Adams Romy Weltman, daughter of U.S. Ambassador Patrick Adams Jr. Michael Paré and granddaughter of Senator George Lawrence Secord James Caan, disappears in Ottawa, setting off a high-stakes cross-border investigation as Canada and the United States wrestle over jurisdiction. In response, RCMP detectives Alfonso Palermo Frank D’Angelo and Robert Santos Tony Nardi take the lead for the Canadian government, driven by a mix of duty and personal grief, with Palermo still haunted by the loss of his wife and daughter.

The two investigators begin by interviewing Ambassador Adams, his wife Mrs. Samantha Adams Doris Roberts, and the ambassador’s assistant Marie MacDonald Ellen Dubin, laying out a web of secrets that stretch from Ottawa to Washington. Pressure from the U.S. President sharpens the glare on everyone involved, and Palermo’s stubborn, methodical approach clashes with some American agents, including FBI Agent Joseph Cortez Armand Assante, who represents a different set of priorities and tactics. A clue surfaces from a nearby bar, lending credence to Palermo’s theory that one of the abductors was present in that scene and left a trace.

Palermo travels to Los Angeles to press the ambassador’s circle further, questioning Mrs. Stewart, the ambassador’s mistress Marina Anderson, while also confronting his own personal reckonings with his disapproving parents. The investigation takes a sharper turn when Senator George Lawrence Secord James Caan uses his influence to pressure Palermo, pulling the detective into a moment of vulnerability and revealing an internal struggle with alcohol that complicates his judgment.

Back in Canada, Palermo and Santos briefly detain a suspect, but the case grows deeper as Palermo uncovers troubling aspects of the ambassador’s past. Mrs. Adams, whose marriage has frayed, invites Palermo to dinner, a social gesture that feels like a trap and a chance to uncoil more hidden truths about the Adams family ties. A former chauffeur recalls a chilling comment the ambassador allegedly made about his daughter being “in the way,” a detail that adds a murkier layer to Jennie’s disappearance and the motive behind it.

A forensic link between bubble wrap found at the crime scene and the bar location corroborates Palermo’s emerging theory, pushing him toward a critical emotional brink. He relapses, and friends and colleagues intervene, guiding him toward therapy as he tries to regroup for the search ahead. Meanwhile, Marie MacDonald eventually confesses to abducting Jennie and hiding her in a warehouse, a revelation that shifts the momentum of the case and leads Santos to move in for an arrest.

In a tense, final confrontation, Santos captures MacDonald, while Palermo races to the warehouse. He finds Jennie drugged but alive, and manages to carry her to safety, all while being haunted by visions of his late wife that refuse to fade. The case closes not with a clean break, but with a fragile sense of resolution—the kind that lingers in the minds of those who hunt for truth across borders and in the shadows of family secrets.
