Spoilers ahead
Wanda Holloway [Holly Hunter] is a Channelview, Texas mother whose long-ago disappointment—being barred from trying out for her high school cheerleading squad—festers into a consuming mission: to see her own daughter soar as a cheerleader and, in a way, relive her missed dream through her child.
She trains her daughter with relentless discipline. Shanna Harper [Frankie Ingrassia] is enrolled in a steady stream of dance and gymnastics classes, and she endures hours of practice even when she’s sick or hurt. Wanda’s efforts aren’t carried out in isolation: next door lives Verna Heath [Elizabeth Ruscio] and her daughter Amber Heath [Megan Berwick], who share a comparable dream for their girl and become a nearby counterpart in the unfolding rivalry.
