On a storm-swept night along the Southwest Pacific Railroad, D.J. ‘Smokey’ Nolan pushes a locomotive toward danger, spotting an oncoming train that seems to appear from nowhere. He slams on the emergency brakes, triggering a derailment that costs several lives. An official inquiry finds no trace of the phantom locomotive, and Smokey is fired for negligence.
Smokey’s daughter, Carolyn Nolan, becomes a central figure in the aftermath. The railroad’s CEO, Mr. Harrington, owns the Southwest Pacific Railroad and faces a desperate moment: he plans to sign papers selling the line at a fraction of its value at midnight. His son, the playboy Bruce Harrington, crosses paths with Carolyn, and they quickly form a bond, sensing they share a need to uncover the truth behind the so-called phantom express.
Together, Bruce and Carolyn set out to reveal the mystery behind the string of accidents. They uncover a deliberate scheme by the president of a rival railroad to crash Southwest Pacific’s stock and buy the railroad’s rolling stock at a steep discount. The plot relies on a cleverly staged deception: a piece of equipment disguised as an engine with headlights is placed on a nearby track to mislead Smokey into thinking a collision is imminent. Communication is hampered by a raging storm, leaving them with precious little time to warn anyone.
To avert a ruinous sale, Bruce decides to reactivate train number 101, bringing Smokey and his fireman back into service and racing to the central office to stop the signing. The journey unfolds through floods and landslides as the train fights its way across a perilous landscape. Bruce arrives just as his father is about to sign and exposes the plot, detailing how the rival’s plan hinged on a convincingly staged engine and a ruthless manipulation of circumstance.
In the end, Bruce and Carolyn’s partnership deepens into love, and they decide to marry. Their wedding culminates in an unconventional honeymoon aboard the very train that carried them toward the truth, turning a perilous mission into a journey shared on the rails. A tale that blends danger, determination, and romance, highlighting how courage and collaboration can outpace even the most calculated corporate machinations.
