In sophisticated Paris society, Zurta and Valya move with practiced ease among the city’s elite. A diary vanishes from an embassy safe during a glittering reception, and a servant is killed when the theft is discovered.
An accomplice, Poole, is handed the diary but betrays them and attempts to slip away with it on the Orient Express, the legendary train traveling between Paris and Trieste. Just in time, the two main figures board the train, where crowded compartments set the stage for a cascade of consequences.
On the train, they pursue Poole, who tries to conceal both himself and the diary, rumored to have the power to spark a fresh conflict in the postwar world. The carriages host a colorful cross-section of travelers—a US Army sergeant with a flair for the ladies, an adulterous couple, a pestering stockbroker, an arrogant wealthy writer with his brow-beaten secretary, an ornithologist, and a celebrated French police inspector. The staff and the passengers contribute lighthearted moments even as the mystery deepens.
The diary passes through many hands before the police begin to investigate Poole’s mysterious death. As tension tightens and motives multiply, Zurta’s grip on the diary grows ever more dangerous. In a final, shocking turn, Zurta takes the diary at gunpoint and leaps from the moving train—not landing safely on the tracks, but stepping unknowingly into the path of a passing express.
