Doris Day stars as Katherine ‘Babe’ Williams, the factory’s steadfast labor leader and chair of the Grievance Committee, at the Sleeptite Pajama Factory in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The union is pressing for a seven-and-a-half-cent raise to bring workers in line with the industry standard, while the factory owner, Mr. Hasler (Ralph Dunn), resists the demand. Freshly hired as superintendent, John Raitt plays Sid Sorokin, a sharp and ambitious foreman-turned-manager who is determined to tighten operations and improve productivity, even as he finds himself drawn to Babe and the human side of factory life.
