The film opens in court, where Merlin Jones legally adopts his monkey Stanley. Midvale College is promised a substantial donation by a wealthy man, Mr. Astorbilt, but he sets a quirky condition: the school must build a man-powered flying machine by a fixed deadline, or the money goes to a rival institution.

To make the improbable project doable, Merlin designs a lightweight airplane whose propeller is driven by bicycle pedals. Realizing that the school’s football team would need more than luck to pull off such a feat, he conceives an adrenaline-based strength elixir that could give a climactic boost to the pilot just as the machine leaves the ground.

To win the jocks’ support, he pitches an honest way to cheat—adapting a recent sleep-learning approach to help them pass a grueling history course. While the players sleep, a timer triggers a phonograph that plays Jennifer’s voice reading their lessons. The scheme initially creates chaos in class when the jocks are called on to speak and the recording unexpectedly takes center stage, yet the effort ultimately pays off for them.

With the jocks onboard, the big day arrives. The pilot drinks the elixir, pedals the contraption into the air, and soars toward victory, securing the prize for the school. In the shadows of celebration, the wealthy donor is last seen fleeing from men in white coats, who want to return him to the local mental hospital.
