Next to a church in a prosperous German industrial town sits the Eden bar—a night club and brothel that unsettles the world’s pious conscience. Father Malachia, a holy man who has spent his life within the monastery’s walls, prays for the bar to go away. In a striking turn of events, his plea seems to be answered: the entire building—and everyone inside—disappears and then reappears on a lonely island in the North Sea, a spectacle that instantly draws attention from the media, politicians, and scientists who crave a clear, rational explanation.
