War-weary Sergeant Xavier Marc Zinga and fresh recruit Faustin Stéphane Bak are suddenly torn away from their Rwandan battalion during a nighttime raid and find themselves lost inside Congolese territory. With dwindling water, scarce food, and the constant threat of malarial fever and prowling jungle wildlife, the two men must press on westward in hopes of reuniting with their unit. Along the way, they navigate a tense landscape where local communities often view the Rwandan Army with suspicion, and where irregular rebel factions complicate every step of their journey.
At first, Xavier’s gruff, exacting leadership clashes with the younger Faustin, but a slow, hard-won bond begins to form as the private proves his worth through practical courage and steady resolve. Their strained camaraderie becomes the backbone of their survival, turning shared danger into a catalyst for trust. The film also invites quiet reflections on the broader horrors that have scarred the region, inviting viewers to contemplate questions of meaning, mercy, and the long shadows of war. Xavier is haunted by the atrocities he has witnessed and even committed, while Faustin carries the weight of a personal loss—the murder of his family and the memory of a wife he longs to see again.
As circumstances tighten, the two decide to impersonate Congolese soldiers themselves, a dangerous ruse that offers a fragile path to safety. Their ruse leads them to a village that extends humble kindness and essential aid, a moment of humanity that stands in stark relief against the violence surrounding them. This turn of events threads through several plotlines—evading rebels, preserving the chance to rejoin the war, and tending to the private wounds each man carries. The film gradually weaves these strands toward a converging ending, where survival, memory, and the relational costs of conflict come into sharp focus.
