Antonio is down until his friend Bassanio confesses his love for Portia, whose late father required that only the man who picks the right casket—silver, gold, or lead—may marry her. Lacking funds, Bassanio asks Antonio for a loan, which Antonio gets from Shylock. When Antonio’s ships are lost, Shylock’s bond threatens his life, and they act to aid.
