
Joanna, the daughter of wealthy merchants from the Różycki bazaar, loves Andrzej, a talented but poor painter. Her father, Kazimierz Burczyk, a shrewd trader who hides his income, decides to find a husband whose status justifies his villa, car and other luxuries. He picks Andrzej, who tries to sell his paintings beneath Warsaw’s Barbican.
