Caleb is a lonely, physically crippled middle-aged gardener who tends the lawns of an affluent Los Angeles neighborhood. He moves through pristine streets and tidy houses with a quiet heaviness, cut off from those around him. He is tormented by a persistent delusion that his deceased brother, Lester, who was always more successful and attractive, still lives in his house and voices venomous judgments from the shadows.

As that haunting belief deepens, Caleb begins to dissociate and embody the memory of that brother. He strips away his glasses and gardening clothes, slips into a wig, and adopts the suave, dangerous persona of the dead man. The transformation isn’t just outward; it seeps into his mind, blurring lines between reality and fantasy. Under this unsettling guise, he launches a string of brutal murders that baffle the police and a tenacious local reporter, Russell, who starts following the case with growing unease.

One neighbor who becomes a target is Sheila, a young woman who lives near Caleb. She informs him she’ll be alone for two weeks because her older husband, Carl, will be away on a business trip. The pair clash in a heated argument, and she fires him. Later that night, Caleb—still in the Lester disguise—deceives his way into Sheila’s house by posing as a Mexican record salesman who appeals to her love of rock music. The ruse collapses into a ruthless act: he drowns Sheila in her swimming pool by shoving a running hose down her throat.

Caleb’s grip on reality continues to unravel. His increasingly unhinged behavior turns violent with the cadence of a nightmare. Meanwhile, Russell’s investigation intensifies as he draws closer to the truth, and a dangerous confrontation looms. In another brutal strike, Caleb targets Russell’s girlfriend, Flo, attacking her in her own home while posing as Lester. Russell, having pieced together enough clues to suspect Caleb, rushes to Flo’s house, only to be met with a brutal, fatal ambush from the killer.

The torment continues as Caleb tortures Flo until she begs him to kill her, and he silences her with a fatal blow from a bed rake. After this spree, Caleb flees the scene and evades capture for a time, but the net eventually tightens. He is caught the next day, and in a final, haunting moment he is confronted with memories of a childhood funeral for Lester. Their mother’s voice returns to him, revealing that she once told Caleb she wished he had died instead, a memory that seals the grim arc of his madness.

The film lingers on the unsettling intersection of identity, desire, and fear, showing how a man’s fractured sense of self can escalate into a chilling series of acts that terrorize a quiet community. It leaves the viewer with a stark portrait of need, blame, and the damaging ghosts of family history, all set against the backdrop of a city that never stops looking beneath the surface of its polished façades.
