Barney Thomson, Robert Carlyle, a 50-year-old Glasgow barber working at Henderson’s Barbers in Bridgeton, leads a life defined by routine, small disappointments, and a stubborn sense of mediocrity. His days glide by under the watchful eye of the shop’s owner James Henderson, and the manager Wullie, Stephen McCole, whose blunt remarks and demanding standards keep Thompson’s world neatly boxed in. Thomson’s quiet dread of his own ordinariness begins to crack when he becomes entangled in a horrifying and absurd new reality: he accidentally kills his boss Wullie during a tense confrontation after a long, simmering sense of dissatisfaction finally boils over.
The immediate fallout thrusts Thomson into a web of fear and improvisation. He tries to keep the awful event contained, but the first real threat comes from his own fear and from the suspicion of others around him. He seeks help from his mother, Cemolina, Emma Thompson, hoping there’s a way to hide what happened. To Thomson’s horror, Cemolina reveals a chilling competence in the macabre—she dismembers the body, shrink-wraps the pieces, labels them, and stores them in the freezer, turning Thomson’s stumble into a deeper, more horrendous crime. This shocking revelation changes the stakes entirely and drags Thomson deeper into a world he never intended to inhabit.
A slip of the tongue by his friend Charlie, Brian Pettifer, adds a dangerous spark to the tinderbox of Thomson’s life. Charlie’s clue sets Chris Porter, Thomson’s younger coworker, Martin Compston, on the scent, and Chris begins to question Thomson’s alibis and stories. Desperation drives Thomson to confess that the killing of Wullie was a tragic accident, yet fear soon morphs into a more immediate, visceral panic. When Chris tries to act, Thomson defends himself with a mop, killing him in a moment of panic and confusion. He drags Chris’s body back to Cemolina’s apartment, hoping to bury the evidence deeper, but the discovery of an extra hand in the freezer alongside a notebook listing various destinations linked to the killed man’s body parts marks Thomson’s downward spiral with a brutal clarity.
As the net tightens, Thomson returns to Chris’s apartment to stage a grim setup and frame Chris, only to discover his freezer is too small to accommodate the entire 패체. The investigation expands, and Thomson’s efforts to stay one step ahead collide with the relentless pursuit of law and order. Detectives close in, and Thomson’s mother’s name—Cemolina—looms large in every possible turning point. The truth that Cemolina is the killer behind the mailed body parts surfaces, shattering Thomson’s tenuous sense of control and forcing him to confront the horrific reality that his own mother has crafted this deadly game.
The revelation devastates Thomson in a way nothing else could. Cemolina’s past—her dealings and the depths of her predatory control—become starkly clear, even as Thomson’s sense of betrayal deepens. The story pivots toward a bleak, dark edge as Thomson confronts the consequences of his mother’s actions and his own complicity, only to discover that his father’s abandonment is part of a longer, more painful history that informs the present.
After Cemolina’s exposed crimes, Thomson dumps Chris’s body into Loch Lubnaig, frighteningly aware that someone might have discovered the truth. A surge of anger follows as he confronts Charlie, feeling the weight of suspicion he carries and unburdens himself in a moment of stark violence. Yet even as the immediate danger recedes from view, the tension remains high.
In a climactic showdown, Thomson’s world collapses into a chaotic, lethal confrontation in the woods. Detectives from the police—led by Detective Inspector Holdall, Ray Winstone, and his partner—face off against Thomson, James Henderson, and their colleagues in a brutal exchange of gunfire. The battle ends with a cascade of deaths on both sides, and Holdall’s suspicions about Thomson are laid bare, but Holdall dies before he can hear Thomson’s full explanation. In the end, Thomson’s version of events and his narrow survival clear his name, turning him into a local legend known for surviving a night that began with a haircut and ended with a firefight in the countryside.
The town slowly absorbs the shock of the brutal, stormy sequence of events. Thomson, once a figure of quiet insignificance, emerges as the survivor who outlived the chaos he was thrust into, and the community—slow to forgive but quick to remember—begins to redefine what it means to endure. Through everything, Thomson remains a paradox: a man defined by his mediocrity who becomes a reluctant witness to the darkest corners of a family’s past, a profession’s pressure, and a city’s need for truth, even when the truth is more grotesque and more comic than anyone expected.
