The Island of Cats 2019

Daikichi Haruyama, portrayed by Shinosuke Tatekawa, is a 70-year-old widower who enjoys a tranquil life on a small island in Japan, accompanied by his beloved cat, Tama. His days are filled with simple pleasures and the company of his childhood friends, notably Iwao, played by Kaoru Kobayashi, who is rather peculiar in that he does not share the islanders’ fondness for cats. Despite the repeated suggestions from his son, Tsuyoshi, represented by Takashi Yamanaka, to leave the island and join his family in Tokyo, Daikichi finds great contentment in his current surroundings.

The island’s peaceful ambiance experiences a gentle shake-up with the arrival of Michiko, portrayed by Ko Shibasaki, a young woman from Tokyo who opens a café. This establishment becomes a lively center for the community, which brings people together in new ways. Among those captivated by Michiko is Kentaro Wakamura, a local doctor played by Tasuku Emoto, who slowly develops a romantic bond with her. At the same time, a young girl named Asumi struggles with her decision to leave the island for university in Tokyo, impacting her relationship with her boyfriend, Satoshi, who finds himself unsettled by her move.

Tragedy strikes when Daikichi suffers a heart attack after the death of a close companion. Fortunately, Tama, his loyal feline, finds him and leads Michiko to his aid, ensuring he receives the necessary medical attention. During his recuperation, Tsuyoshi makes another attempt to persuade his father to move to Tokyo, but Daikichi adamantly declines, resolute in his heartfelt connection to the island and its community.

Upon returning home from the hospital, Daikichi is weary but is greeted lovingly by Tama, who he affectionately tells where to find his food. However, the next morning brings anxiety when Tama goes missing. For three long days, Daikichi searches in vain across the island for his companion. Just when despair begins to take hold, he comes home one evening to find Tama waiting at the door, bringing with him a fish as a gift for Daikichi. Overwhelmed with joy and relief, Daikichi embraces his furry friend.

Supported by the warmth of his community, Daikichi gradually regains his strength. Tsuyoshi pays another visit to reiterate his plea for his father to relocate to Tokyo, yet Daikichi stands firm in his choice, finding peace and fulfillment in his life among his friends—both human and feline. In a heartwarming conclusion, Daikichi strolls through the countryside with Tama by his side, expressing his optimism with the heartfelt sentiment, > “The best is yet to come, right Tama?”
