Hawker is saved from a brutal beating at the hands of the Manchus and is soon sent to the Shaolin temple by the stern Iron-Fisted Monk. There, under the tutelage of his master James Tien, he undergoes intense training, but his stubborn nature pushes him to run away from the temple. He is confronted by his master again and forced to attempt the four tests that test his discipline, strength, and resolve.
Coinciding with this, a corrupt Manchu official Fung Hak-On asserts his authority and preys on women. He rapes Chang Ching-Po, the sister of Liang, who later takes her own life, leaving Liang furious and bent on revenge. Liang kills one Manchu, but the act is wrongly attributed to Hawker, stirring tension between them.
Seeking to empower workers against the oppressors, the Iron-Fisted Monk arranges for Hawker to train all the people at a dye factory in kung fu. The workers, many of them seasoned and unarmed, begin to learn practical fighting skills and a sense of solidarity, preparing to defend themselves should the Manchus press their advantage. This plan marks a new alliance between Hawker and the temple and offers a glimmer of hope amid growing danger.
The confrontation reaches a brutal peak as the Manchus butcher the dye factory workers, killing Liang’s wife and Liang’s mother, the latter portrayed by Lai Man. As Liang falls from his wounds, Hawker and the Iron-Fisted Monk renew their vow of vengeance and prepare for a final act of resistance against their oppressors.
Ultimately, the tale emphasizes a hard-won justice, where the righteous path carved by Hawker and his mentor leads to a decisive, if costly, retribution against tyranny. The film closes with a resolve that echoes through the workers’ hardship, a testament to courage, loyalty, and the power of training to empower those with little protection against violent oppression.
