Clay Halliday Bill Williams meets up with his estranged brother Daniel Halliday Joseph Cotten to tell him that their father, Big Dan Halliday Ward Bond is dying and that Clay is engaged to Aleta Burris Viveca Lindfors. Daniel is surprised to hear that their father would give his blessing to the engagement. When they return to the ranch, there are obvious sparks between Daniel and Aleta Viveca Lindfors, hinting at a complicated, forbidden attraction that will test loyalties and family bonds.
Before he enters his father’s room, Daniel has a vivid flashback to a time before the estrangement. His daughter, Martha Halliday Betsy Blair, is in love with Jivaro Burris Christopher Dark, Aleta’s brother, a half-breed who works on the Halliday ranch. Big Dan orders Jivaro off the ranch, and when a rider is attacked and killed, Jivaro happens to be nearby and is attacked as well. Big Dan arrests Jivaro and puts him in jail, a decision that will haunt the family and inflame tensions on both sides of the line.
Big Dan leaves with a posse to hunt down the rest of the suspected attackers, despite Daniel’s pleas to stay and protect Jivaro, leaving Clay as the sole deputy to guard him while an angry mob gathers outside the jail. Daniel and Clay attempt to help Jivaro escape, but the mob presses in and Jivaro is lynched, a tragedy that drives Daniel to vow never to return and to seek solace with Aleta’s family. Daniel’s departure reverberates through the ranch, and Aleta’s father, Chad Burris Jay C. Flippen, overhears Daniel and Aleta discussing their secret and the need to shield Big Dan from blame in the lynching.
The Halliday and Burris families confront one another in a tense confrontation when Big Dan and Clay ride to the Burris ranch. A dramatic face-off ends with Big Dan killing Burris, escalating the feud and setting the stage for a broader reckoning between father and son. After the funeral for both Burris men, Daniel leaves again, while Martha brings Aleta to the Halliday ranch to recover from illness following the burials. Clay begins to fall in love with Aleta, deepening the emotional stakes and complicating loyalties.
Unsettling events begin to plague the Halliday ranch, seemingly at Daniel’s instigation, including a catastrophic stampede that threatens to ruin the cattle and reputation of the Hallidays. Big Dan forms a posse to hunt for Daniel, convinced he is behind the trouble. He discovers a noose hanging in his own home, sets fire to a barn, and writes a threatening note claiming the end of him as a lawman. In the midst of the chaos, Daniel, hiding in the shadows as the barn burns, encounters Aleta and they share a kiss, an act that starkly reveals how far Daniel has drifted from the man his father once was. Aleta then warns him that Daniel is becoming more like his father, a realization that strains their bond and underscoring the tragic cycle of violence that defines their world.
The townsfolk appeal to Big Dan to surrender his badge, but he refuses, clinging to the authority that defines him. Daniel confronts his father, and the two men clash in a brutal struggle, with Daniel emerging triumphant in the fight and the room heavy with unspoken consequences. Six months pass, and Daniel returns, entering Big Dan Halliday’s room to declare that things have changed—that he has given his blessing for Clay to marry Aleta, a revelation that shocks everyone who has watched the feud unfold. Big Dan reveals that he lied to draw Daniel back and points a gun at his son, threatening to kill him; Martha enters and disarms him, but the tension remains thick as Daniel, Martha, Clay, and Aleta leave the room in disgust. In the end, Big Dan staggers to the doorway, aiming to reclaim control, but Daniel stands his ground and dares him to shoot. The old lawman hesitates, acknowledging that Daniel is too much like him, and with a final, fatal compromise, Big Dan dies in Daniel’s arms, closing a legacy defined by violence, pride, and a stubborn insistence on what it means to be a family.
