The Great American Beauty Contest 1973

In a sharp, satirical look at pageant culture, Gloria Rockwell enters a beauty contest with a clear mission: to seize the finale as a platform to speak out against exploitation and sexism.

Meanwhile, pageant runners Peggy Lowery [Eleanor Parker] and Dan Carson [Robert Cummings] navigate their own troubles: Peggy is displeased when Ralph Dupree [Louis Jourdan], a lecherous movie producer, attends as a last-minute replacement judge, and Dan worries the contest could be rigged.

Each contestant carries personal tensions into the glare of the lights: Miss Maine Angelique [Susan Damante] feels neglected by her father; Miss Ohio Melinda Wilson [Kathrine Baumann] is naive about the wider world beyond home; Miss New Jersey Pamela Parker [Tracy Reed] faces marginalization as the lone African-American contestant; Miss Utah [Christopher Norris] is friendly but dismissed as an also-ran; Miss Texas T. L. Dawson [Farrah Fawcett] finds her relationship with her boyfriend tested as the pageant keeps them apart.

The pageant world is sketched with satire as the contestants rehearse with their chaperones and through the preliminaries. Ralph Dupree [Louis Jourdan] even tries to blackmail Peggy into arranging a liaison with Angelique [Susan Damante] to clinch the win, a scheme tied to Peggy’s own breakthrough in the industry.

Finalists emerge: Gloria Rockwell, Pamela Parker [Tracy Reed], Melinda Wilson [Kathrine Baumann], Angelique [Susan Damante], and T. L. Dawson [Farrah Fawcett]. Ultimately, Gloria wins the pageant but, to the surprise of her feminist friends and herself, she tearfully accepts the crown.

Behind the scenes, the backstage world shows how chaperones shape the contestants’ experiences, including Miss Utah Chaperone [Myrna Fahey] and Miss New Jersey Chaperone [Barbara Dodd], underscoring that support and guidance are a constant part of the competition. Miss Indiana [Charlie Douglas] also makes a quieter, uncredited appearance, adding to the mosaic of hopefuls.
