In D.W. Griffith’s contemporary drama, Ralph travels to France with his shipbuilder father and becomes enamored with Blossom, the granddaughter of his father’s friend—a Civil‑War veteran still bitter toward the Union. Although Blossom is betrothed to a French nobleman, the outbreak of war prompts Ralph to enlist, while his wayward brother Jim, a notorious heartbreaker, is drafted.
