After the opening sequence that documents a student uprising at a women’s boarding school following a fellow student’s death, the film unfolds in a flashback, tracing how the tensions within the school intensified and set the stage for what happens next.

Inside the dormitory walls, opposition to the conservative, authoritarian administration grows louder and more organized. The once-unified student body factions into clear camps: a left‑wing faction led by Akiko Hayashino, and a more apolitical group centered on Tomiko Takioka. A spectrum of views also emerges, with some urging immediate action while others counsel against acting too soon. The clash among these currents shapes every confrontation, decision, and setback the students face.

Among these tensions, the movement is fueled by a dynamic who becomes its loudest voice, while another figure serves as a steady ideological engine. Akiko Hayashino is presented as an outspoken socialist from an upper‑class background, challenging the school’s norms and pushing her peers toward a more radical stance. Meanwhile, Toshiko emerges as a leading figure and ideologue, pressing for bold moves and rallying the students around their cause.

The catalyst at the center of the turmoil is Yoshie Izushi, a student who struggles with her studies yet comes to the school in search of independence from a rigid father who resents her desire to marry her friend Shimoda after graduation. Her friend is Sankichi Shimoda, a figure who stands with her as the movement takes shape. Yoshie’s arrival unsettles the delicate balance of the campus, drawing the gaze of those who hope to shield her and those who seek to use her plight to push the movement forward.

Tragically, Yoshie’s fragile position is exploited by those who see her as an opening for their broader agenda. She is picked on by Mayumi Gojo and subjected to social distancing by the other girls, all under the weight of strict rules that prohibit late work and personal exemptions. The mounting pressure and sense of isolation culminate in Yoshie’s suicide, a blow that reverberates through the entire school.

In the aftermath, Tomiko and Shimoda mourn the loss, and the tragedy becomes a catalyst for blame among the leadership and the student body. Tomiko, Akiko, and Mayumi each cast the fault in different directions, reflecting the deep fault lines that the death has exposed within the community.

As the pain and anger linger, the students refuse to stay silent. Under Toshiko’s guidance, the others surge into the auditorium, blocking the space and raising their voices in an unofficial hymn that the administration had banned. The act becomes a potent symbol of resistance, solidarity, and the stubborn wish of the students to be heard, even as the consequences of their choices continue to unfold.
