Barney Gorman works hard as a garbageman in Philadelphia, but his job, though essential, indirectly embarrasses his family. His frustration is amplified by following the Philadelphia Eagles, a team mired in a slump, and a sticky lever on his garbage truck has given him a surprisingly powerful kick that he doesn’t realize he possesses. One day at the city dump, he launches a water jug extremely far, catching the attention of Eagles executives who are scouting the site for a potential new stadium. The Eagles coach offers him a shot as the team’s new kicker, Coach Gus Rogenheimer seeing it as a smart publicity stunt to show that an average Joe can make it in the NFL.
Barney joins the Eagles, but initial acceptance is limited, especially from his roommate, Bubba Downs. As he starts converting important field goals, he wins fans across town and earns the nickname G-Man, a rise that comes with growing fame and a new level of confidence. Yet this sudden popularity begins to inflame his ego, and he starts looking down on his teammates.
In the next game, a missed potential game-winning kick costs the team a playoff shot. Afterward, Barney heads to a bar; a striking woman approaches him, asks if he is Barney Gorman, and asks to take a photo with him, only to kiss him before walking away. The incident reverberates back home, and his wife, Marie Gorman, sees the newspaper photo and kicks him out, leaving his suitcase and the clipping on the doorstep.
After some soul-searching, he apologizes to his wife, his son, his father, and his teammates. The Eagles suspend him briefly, but they eventually welcome him back just in time for the season’s final game. The crucial moment arrives when the game again hinges on a last-second play; the holder fumbles the snap, Barney grabs the snapped ball, and scores the game-winning touchdown. In the end-of-season press conference, he remembers his roots as a garbageman and underscores that garbage workers deserve respect too, for the hard work they put in to keep the city clean.
