In a quiet English market town, Betty Kane claims that the owners of an isolated house, the spinster Marion Sharpe and Marion’s mother, Mrs. Sharpe, kidnapped and beat her. The police believe Betty’s story, but Robert Blair, a local bachelor and lawyer, is skeptical. Risking ostracism from the community, Blair quietly sets about proving the innocence of the two women, determined to uncover the truth behind the accusations.
The community begins to shun the women as they have already effectively been tried by the local press. Attacks on the house escalate: windows are broken and graffiti is painted on the walls. Local garage mechanics offer to help guard the property, underscoring how paranoia and rumor have taken hold.
It eventually emerges that Betty was claiming to be 19 and was having an affair with a travelling salesman. She planned to explain her absence by a kidnap and chose the house known as The Franchise, having seen it over the high wall from the top of a double decker bus, and hearing about the house and its occupants from a former employee, whom she easily manipulated and dominated.
Blair asks Marion to marry him, but she declines, and after the trial she and her mother intend to fly away to Canada. However, Blair is waiting in the seat behind them on the plane, revealing his continued involvement and catching them by surprise.
